Our History

Bedford Main Street, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in 1985 as a part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Program. Since its origin, Bedford Main Street, Inc. has been working tirelessly to preserve and revitalize Historic Centertown Bedford.

The program helps prevent downtown districts across the Commonwealth from economic decline and possible demolition.  Bedford Main Street works to re-energize economic development of our Centertown district while utilizing our cultural assets and character.  This is further accomplished by pooling the resources of local civic and business leaders who are determined to bring our Main Street community back to life. The innovative Four-Point Approach © program uses design, promotion, economic vitality and organization to reach our goal to help us all build a better community.  It is one of the original Main Street Communities in the Commonwealth and has been awarded numerous times by the Commonwealth of Virginia, National Main Street, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, and more.
